I'm not sure if it is a flashback or a glipse into the future

So my mom emailed a link to this video to me and my sisters. I'm pretty sure she said every single line of it to me at least once (and probably multiple times) when I was growing up. I have a feeling I am on the verge of having the realization I have become my mom (and mom I mean no offense by that). Enjoy. I did.

Okay so it turns out I don't know how to post a video if it isn't mine so just click on the word "video". Please excuse the fact that I'm not blog savvy.

Life Changing Experience

Okay, so I'll admit now that the title is a little misleading. This weekend did have a few events that made me realize that life as I know it is going to change dramatically. It's probably not a secret to anyone that having a kid changes your world and I was certainly not silly enough to think that it wouldn't change mine. With each stage of development it changes your life just a little more, crawling, walking, climbing, etc. E hit one of those big landmarks when Br jokingly told E to open our bedroom door to let the dog in. Turns out neither one of them knew that E could actually open the door. Maybe that's not that big of a deal, but with an extremely curious, mischievous, and busy little boy like E I'm pretty sure that this newly discovered skill is going to bring some pretty interesting adventures in the near future.

The next big change I'm expecting will be in the next few weeks when E turns 2. I think I've taken for granted the fact that we can just drag him along to things for free. For example, no longer can he be a lap child on a plane... not that he actually stayed on a lap.

This weekend we took advantage of the fact that we still have three weeks of FREEdom and let him tag along to a hockey game with us (do you like how I segwayed). Okay, so we mostly let him come because Br's was given two tickets late Friday afternoon and we didn't have the time or desire to search for a babysitter last minute. I'm so glad we decided to bring him along. Sure we only got to see 2 of the periods but for about half of the first period he was more into the game than any other person in the arena (and we're talking hockey fans here). He danced to every song, he clapped loudly at every good play and constantly yelled "GO" to keep the team inspired. I have to give a little thanks for the tickets being so close to the ice so we could see the action, for the wide selection of tasty snacks including E's favorite (popcorn) which bought us half a period, for the cups being filled with a lot of ice which bought us yet another half of a period, the person in front of us for not showing up so that E could hang over the chair and not really bother people, and the periodic blaring of music with a good dance beat for distracting him from the fact that he had to stay within the confines of a few seats. Overall, despite the fact that E's development is keeping me on my toes, and his aging is going to hit the wallet a little, I'm really enjoying watching him become a little boy.

Handy Man

As a gift to me, over the break Br tackled the forever long "to do" list and E decided to help.

A quick get away

So what I really wanted for Christmas was one more vacation before E turns 2 and we have to buy his a plane ticket. I imagined sitting out on a warm beach in southern CA or by a fire in a cabin in CO or some other place where I didn't have to care about anything. Then I check airplane tickets and reality hit and I decided to look into a little local get away. We stayed a night at the Great Wolf Lodge so we could play at the indoor water park there. It turned out to be good time. We all enjoyed playing games in the arcade and hitting the water park a couple times. E has always loved water but he really surprised me with his fearlessness. For example I thought we'd play in the wave pool only when the waves were off. Turns out E only likes swimming in it when the waves were going and got really mad the first time they turned off. He thought it was hilarious to get smacked in the face with huge waves of water. They had a few different levels of slides in the small child play area. I figured we'd avoid the blue winding slide with fast water moving down it. No, it turns out E lives for being thrown around on his way down and then being thrust under water as he was dumped off the slide by white water. He never ceases to surprise me. I love me little guy and his adventurous soul.

We had ourselves a merry little Christmas

Photo shoot in his Christmas church outfit...and last documentation of his curls
The house all lit up. E helped to fill the luminarias up with sand

E dancing in his Christmas PJs. Showing us the snowman was "tall, tall, tall"

He was definitely like a kid on Christmas morning

This is what I learned in 7 years of college

So I sat down tonight with one of the most fantastic cups of hot cocoa I've had in a long time and was immediately reminded of my undergraduate schooling in Biological Engineering. Among many other things we had fun little discussions on properties of different foods. For example, pizza cheese burns your tongue because a great deal of energy is given off when it changes states of matter when the hot melted cheese hits your not as hot tongue and solidifies. Both starch and ketchup are non-Newtonian fluids. While starch mixed with water with get thicker as you apply force to it, ketchup will thin which is why it is actually easier to get it out of the bottle when you shake it (or why someone finally got smart and invented the squeeze bottle). But the best food fact (if you can call it that) I ever learned is how to make a really good cup of cocoa from the little powder packets. The secret is "making a paste". I don't know about you but when I just dump the powder into a cup of hot water it takes forever to get it all mixed up and then when you think it is completely mixed you still find powder chunks as you are trying to sip. My wise professor Tim Taylor (yes that is the guys name on Home Improvement) taught me the correct steps for using the powder. They are as follows:
  1. Place the desired amount of cocoa in the bottom of your selected hot liquids container (aka a mug or Styrofoam cup) -- I personally like to use at least a packet and a half of cocoa, usually two. Sometimes if I'm feeling crazy I add some ovaltine.

  2. Pour just a little bit of hot water in the container, not too much, just enough to wet the powder.

  3. Stir the contents into a paste. This achieves the desired goal of dissolving all the powder without the hassle of the clumps.

  4. Add more liquid to desired level. At this point since all of the powder is dissolved it doesn't have to be hot. I like to add hot water to about halfway up the cup then add cold milk so that the end result is a really creamy cup of cocoa that is already the perfect drinking temperature without the scalding of the tongue or the blowing and waiting.

  5. Optional- Add marshmallows, flavored syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon, sprinkles or any other cocoa accoutrement you'd like to sample.

  6. Drink up!

I avoided working again

E and I braved the mall yesterday and all three of us went to Walmart today and surprisingly neither was that bad. You know what one of my favorite things about the age E is right now is he's been great at actually going with me to pick things out that he'd like for Christmas. He watches me buy them but then by the time we are home he's completely forgotten about them so he'll hopefully be surprised and excited when he opens them Christmas morning.

What I really should have posted about

So I really should be working right now, but I am just not in the mood to be editing and Installation guide for septic systems. shhhh... don't tell on me.

Thank you for humoring me through my last post. I really felt bad about it and Br was stuck out of town due to the icy roads so I have nobody to talk it out with. Sorry.

In any event, things have been super busy around here. Both Br and I have been left with little spare time (for being social or blogging) due to work responsibilities and travels. Fortunately one of our recent trips had nothing to do with work. We went to my sister's in Baltimore for Thanksgiving. My dad was out there visiting at the same time too. We had a nice visit with them all. It was a quick trip with little time to do anything but just spend time with family. We did manage to sneak away to the National Aquarium for a few hours. While we waited outside for our turn to go in, E kept himself busy pushing his cousin around in a stroller, chasing seagulls and trying to jump in the harbor (and I mean that very literally). Once inside he got a little mad when I kept him from climbing into the ray tank. I'm guessing if he could tell me what he wanted to be when he grew up it would be a scuba diver or marine biologist or member of a polar bear club. Here are a few pics from the trip. Check out the new Winter slide show if you haven't gotten you fill of Melton and Goodson pics.

E about 3/4 way through the aquarium. He's asleep on Pappy because he wouldn't let me or Br anywhere near him for most of the weekend.

My lack of time has also resulted in a lack of jumping into the holiday cheer. I have yet to really do any Christmas shopping. Not good. We've barely just put up or tree this week and E took no delay in undecorating it. I'm also bummed because I haven't made a single holiday treat, and I just don't know that it's going to happen this year. I guess I still have a week to try and pull something off but I guess if it doesn't happen, I have 372 more days to try again before next year. For all of you who haven't spent a Christmas with me, I really am usually more festive than this. Please give me one more year to prove it.

Does this make me a bad person?

Mind you that when I sat down to the computer to make this post I had no idea that it's been almost a month since I last posted something. Sorry this is going to be a weird one (not for the faint of heart or weak in stomach), especially after such a long hiatus. We'll see if E agrees to let me on the computer long enough to write another post.

Anyway right now I'm feeling kind of really bad. Most of you probably don't know, but I really like lizards. When I was a kid they were by far my favorite animal up until my adolescence when my favorite became frogs, but lizards were still a close second. I loved when we moved to our current house because there are tons of really cool and really big lizards in our yard. Today one of my friends met his demise due to my carelessness. I pulled out of the garage to go pick up E. My habit is to back up then stop and wait for the garage door to go all the way down before I go again so that I don't get paranoid as I'm driving away that I left my garage open. Right as the garage was almost completely closed I noticed a big lizard walking very slowly (probably because it is way too cold outside for cold blooded creatures), kind of like a dinosaur, towards the door. He was so slow and the door was coming down so fast. Turns out when a garage door and a lizard get in a fight the door wins. I thought that maybe if I opened the door fast then he could escape. Unfortunately he was a little too slow moving because I had already pushed the button to make it go back down after I decided it was a futile effort. The shock of him moving again made me open the door one more time. I waited a little bit, but by this point it was definitely too little too late. So now I'm feeling like a bad person because I've smashed one of my friends, not once, not twice, but now four times (since I did it again after returning from getting E). I'm a horrible person.

All I really should say is WOW!...

...but since we all know I like to be long winded, humor me while I write a long post.

My story starts months ago when I was silly and got mad when Br showed up to the primary activity with news that he had some complications getting Coldplay tickets that had gone on sale that morning. I was more then a little mad/disappointed (mistake 1). He said that he was going to try to get tickets through the Ticketmaster auction and I was skeptical that we'd actually win some (mistake 2). Well we did win some and so I had to eat my words and should have begged for forgiveness for my shortcomings.
Fast forward to last night. It would be a serious understatement to say that Br came through for me with some good tickets... But we'll get to that in a minute. We sat in section 105 row A. If you have really good eyes then it is where the tiny yellow dot is on the seating chart below. For those of you who are wondering why I even put the seating chart in my post because the picture is so small, our seats were in the front row of the section facing the top cat walk that is coming off the main stage. The second I sat down I knew there was a chance that Chris (that's the singer for those of you who aren't fans but really really should be-- BTW I feel like we are on a first name basis now considering our interaction that I will describe a little later) would walk within an easily measurable distance from me. I was so excited.

We sat through about a song and a half of the first opening group Sleeper Car (a band from El Paso). The second opening act was John Hopkins. I think he is best described as what Ross from friends would have become if he had ever made it big with his synthesizer. John was a dude standing at a table with a couple laptops and synthesizer with a single spotlight shinning on him while on the other side of the stage some really weird animations flashed as he pressed and spun different button, keys and knobs.

I kept myself amused as we waited for Coldplay to take stage by watching people walk in front of us to get back stage. We saw both opening acts walk right in front of us to go talk to people in the audience. John even stopped right in front of me for a while to talk to a "fan". A few minutes before the main event four really big guys were escorted from back stage to some seats in the next section down from ours. I guessed that they were athletes of some sort but really had no idea who. Some slight intoxicated girl by us said two of them were Tony Romo and Jason Witten. I wouldn't know then from any other large guys although I've seen a few blogs today that confirm it was them. All I have to say is "HA, I had better seats then Tony Romo!"

Enough of the pre-game report. Coldplay came on and WOW! I mean WOW! It only took until the third song for Chris to finally make it within spitting distance of me. He came right over to our section and said "I can tell this is going to be a good one". It was. Even when Chris wasn't on my catwalk I was still close enough to see him clearly on the stage. I could see the sweat dripping from his face. I could see the sweat knee pit marks on the back of his skinny pants. I could clearly see when he was getting his feet tangled up in his guitar cord as he played and danced all over the stage. It was amazed at how close we were and then...

What I didn't mention was that the cat walk actually stopped about 5 seats down from me so he wasn't actually right across from me when he walked to the end, just closer than I could ever imagine. At the end of the catwalk (Directly in front of where I was sitting) there was a little enclosed area with large things covered in big black cloths. You can't imagine the excitement (complete understatement) when some roadies pulled off the cloth to reveal a guitar, electronic drum, and piano. Yes, I was sitting less a narrow walkway across from what would soon elevate and become "stage B" (that's what the roadie's blog called it). The entire band congregated less than 10 feet from me to sing a few songs directly to me (or at least I'd like to think they were just for me). I mean if I ever had them play a concert in my living room I wouldn't have been any closer. Then the rest of the band left, leaving Chris alone to sing "the Hardest Part" alone- Now that one was definitely to me-- I mean I was at eye level with him and his piano was pointed directly at me. He may have sang another song to... I'm not sure, I was in a surreal daze, (literally he was so close that it didn't feel real at all). I do know that he stuck around and started Vida la Viva and then went back to center stage. WOW! They played a great show. They pull off a perfect mix of music and theatrics including showering the crowd in two kinds of butterfly confetti during "Lovers in Japan". They were nice enough to play my favorite songs including "Fix You" (I almost cried a little during it) and an acoustic version (that included a mandolin-- Yeah for mandolins) of "the Scientist". They played that one in the crowd in the nose bleed section of the stadium. It was great! They closed the show with an encore of "Yellow" and I had a flash back of Spring Break Sophomore year in college when my roommates and I duplicated the video on a beach in Oregon. Good Times!

In short, not that this post could ever be considered short, if you ever have the opportunity to go see Coldplay, do it (They are playing Denver and SLC this weekend for those readers that are in those areas).

THANK YOU BR! You are the best! I doubt we'll ever top this concert experience but I'm willing to try.

What I like about you

So I've had a lot of mommy and E time lately. I got lots of cuddling a week ago after E's surgery. We set up a train track today and actually got to play on it a while before E destroyed it (Any of you who have played with him know that is a huge thing since his first instinct is DESTROY). He even let me go into CVS today and get what I needed without pulling things off the shelf or screaming. It was awesome.

In any event I'd like to list my favorite things about him. Don't consider this all inclusive since I really do dig the kid, but I just thought he deserved some props.

*He gives the best kisses ever.

*I love how kind his eyes are and how bright they get when he gives a genuine smile.

*He's recently started holding my hand (which in the past he'd immediately drop to the flow and get mad when I'd do) and walking with me places.

*My favorite thing that he says is please (pronounced peas) because he usually says it with the aforementioned smile.

*My favorite sound is his random really cute "toot toot" when he sees a truck (random tangent- This started when a truck passed us on the freeway and honked it's horn. He immediately imitated it and that gave way my favorite noise. -- Even more random tangent, he cracked me up on the way to preschool a couple weeks ago when he started to sing along with the Rolling Stone's song Sympathy for the Devil (Sorry about the title)--You know the one that has the who who repeated over and over).

*Speaking of singing along, he's recently started lip syncing to songs. He still doesn't talk much so he doesn't know how to sing but he moves his mouth with a really cute enthusiasm when he really gets into a song. It cracks me up every time.

* I love his dancing. I can't help but be happy when I see it.

* You know I just love who he is in general.

Thank you E for being mine!

Oops

So apparently while I was on sabbatical from my blog I was tagged. I guess I'm supposed to post the fourth picture in my picture folder. Here it is.
Random I know. For a while I was collecting cool pictures of letters for a project that I have never gotten around to, and probably never will. I'd like to tag Diana and Amy because I really like their pictures.

Finally... another post

Yes, I know it has been forever since I've posted anything. No, I'm not dead, nor sick, nor anything really except busy. I was really busy before I went out of town and then have been even more busy than that after being out of town. I've got a lot to catch up on work and so I spend way too long on the computer any day and can't bring myself to do anything more (blog, email) after that. Anyway, since I shouldn't be working today I'll try to get a few posts out.

It has been almost 2 weeks since my trip to CA and I haven't written anything about it. It's not that I didn't have a really good time, it's just that I didn't take pictures so I'm waiting for my sister to post some so I can steal them. So stand by.

I guess I'd be a delinquent mother if I didn't write something about E's Halloween. Earlier in the week he had a "Fall" party in his preschool class and so I had my first shot at sending treats to his class. I'm a little embarrassed though since this is the type of thing I live for but didn't have time to actually do it this week. When I signed up to bring cookies I had vision of grandeur. When it was the night before and I still had to go to the grocery store for ingredients I realized it just wasn't happening. So instead of showing some elaborate project like I wish I could have done, instead I'll just share a trick for making cookies that look way fancier than they actually are.
1. Already made cookie dough, already made icing, a baggie with chocolate melts in it.
2. Bake the cookies.
3. Let cool
4. Ice with frosting
5. Make concentric circles on the cookie with the melted chocolate
6. Alternate dragging a tooth pick from the inside out and the outside in.
7. Put on plastic spiders and Viola
Spider cookies (works on cupcakes and other iced yummy things too) that look like you made an effort but really just didn't have time.

Fast forward to the end of the week.

Friday morning E got invited to a little Halloween party at the park. Since his actual costume was still missing a few key seams he went as last years costume (thank goodness he was chubby last year and skinny this year--and yes, I will acknowledge that the hat doesn't exactly fit). He was Tuck from the Wonder Pets (the only male wonder pet by the way). I felt bad because they had all kinds of really fun activities planned but E spent most of the time running toward the forest (there was probably an animal in trouble he was trying to save), toward the other side of the park, toward the playground, toward anywhere he wasn't supposed to be. I guess I should thank him for the workout since I wasn't able to hit that gym.
Friday evening he went to the church Trunk or Treat as Linguine from Ratatouille (It's actually a preview for his birthday party in three short months...Ahhh I better get cracking). He went to most of the cars with a sucker hanging from him mouth with a back up ready to go in hand. I let him use one of my soup pots as his bucket (to go with the theme of his costume). The bad thing is I don't know that I can ever use it again without him assuming that there is candy inside. Oh well.

BR's first post! (and maybe last)

BE recently took a trip with her sisters (and mother) to Disneyland, so I took the opportunity to take a trip to Paris (yes, the one in France).  It was great, and now that I have mastered the language and culture, I am ready to go back with BE (E will have to wait a few years--11 hours is a long time on a plane with a kid!).

BR
